SEO competitor analysis is often a waste of your time.
Unless you do this:
Most people plug their competition into an SEO tool and export the list.
Great, you now have 4,000 keywords that your competitors cover and you don’t.
Say it with me:
Just because a competitor targets keywords that you don’t does not mean those keywords are producing revenue for them!
When finding keyword opportunities, don’t write an article because a tool tells you that you’re missing that keyword…
Dig deeper.
What’s the CTR on that keyword? In other words, would ranking #1 even get you that many clicks?
What’s the competition like? Can you realistically rank #1?
And if you can, how long would it take to get to (read: how much money will it take to get #1)?
And if you get to #1, with the average CTR and conversion rate of the page, how many days, months, years, would it take to recoup the initial investment to get there?
Just because someone else targets a keyword does not make that keyword profitable.
Use competitor analysis to find keyword opps you might have missed, but dig deeper to understand if they are worth your time.
